Louise Rieger

Louise is a Kent-based artist whose work explores memory, domesticity, and the quiet persistence of the past in the present. Following a BA in Illustration at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, Louise established a successful career in television production before returning to painting full-time. Working from her home studio, she draws inspiration from the suburban landscapes of her upbringing and the visual language of the 1970s and 80s.

Louise’s representational style utilizes "snapshot" compositions to elevate the ordinariness of clipped moments in time. Her paintings reference family Polaroids, found photographs, and fragments of film, often embracing the artifacts of these analogue mediums—overexposure, blurriness, and fading. While her palette of browns, ochres, and purples evokes a sense of familiarity, her work looks beyond simple nostalgia. Instead, she seeks to capture the "ghosts of lost futures," depicting a longing for a time or a feeling that remains just out of reach. Louise uses the historical weight and slowness of oil paint to ground these fleeting, fragile moments, transforming the "trace of a trace" into something enduring.
